Ano Poroia are built in the foot of the mountain Mpeles and northwesterly the Kerkini lake in height of 385 meters in a forest with centenarian platens, and are lived according to the inventory 2001 from 1529 permanent residents.

The village was lived by Greeks of Mosxopolis, South Ipiros, Pindos and Grammos before and after Ali Pasa. The name Poroia appears that it preexisted the installation of new settlers. Apparently the new settlement was named Ano Poroia to discrimination by preexisting, the population of which was constituted by Turkeys brought by depths of Mikra Asia for habitation of the under populated regions. What means the word Poroia? According to an opinion, in the Slavic language means torrent. However, the opinions are diverged, maybe the name Poroia it has clearly Greek origin and emanates from the words resource, crossing, passage and flow.
